Partnering in Purpose: Truth, Excellence, and Service in Action

Partnering in Purpose: Truth, Excellence, and Service in Action

This past week, our school community came together for two key events: our Parent–Teacher Interview Evenings and the Stage 5 & 6 Subject Selection Evening. These occasions were far more than administrative necessities; they were vibrant expressions of our commitment to Truth, Excellence, and Service.

At the heart of both events was a shared desire to walk alongside one another: students, parents, and teachers on the journey of learning and growth. The Parent–Teacher Interview Evenings offered valuable opportunities for open, honest conversations. These moments of
connection reflected our pursuit of Truth, celebrating what is going well, identifying areas for growth, and ensuring that each student is seen, known, and supported.

Equally significant was the Subject Selection Evening. With a broader range of subjects on offer than ever before, students and families were empowered to make thoughtful, informed choices aligned with individual strengths, interests, and aspirations. This is Excellence in
action, expanding opportunity, enabling discernment, and encouraging ambition. Throughout the evening, there was a tangible sense of unity and shared purpose.

Staff gave generously of their time and expertise, guiding students with clarity and care. Parents engaged deeply, asking questions and affirming the unique journeys their children are on. This collaborative spirit is the essence of Service, working together for the flourishing of
others.

We are grateful to our staff for their dedication, to our students for their curiosity and courage, and to our parents for their trust and partnership. As we look ahead, may we continue to build strong relationships grounded in mutual respect and a shared commitment
to seeking the Truth, pursuing Excellence, and living lives fulfilled in Service.

With gratitude,

Partnering Together for Your Child’s Success

Partnering Together for Your Child’s Success

As a Leader in Me School, one of our 5 Core Paradigms is that parents and teachers partner to support the whole child. What this means is that we value you as your student’s first teacher. You know your student best. Oftentimes it’s easy to assume that teachers are the only ones who are responsible for a student’s academic and social success in school. As a parent of a Leader in Me student, we believe that you are a valuable member of our Learning Team. You have an important role in the educational journey of your student. Research shows that when parents are engaged in their student’s education, the student’s success, academically and behaviourally, increases significantly. If we know this partnership is critical, what can we do to create a partnership?

We would love to get your insights and feedback on what we can do to nurture this partnership as well as your ideas on what you would like to do as a partner in your student’s education.

Following are a few of our insights on working together to create a partnership:

Partnering is about communication and relationships. We want to honor your family’s culture, beliefs, and circumstances.

We want to communicate with you about what is happening in school, but that’s only one part of effective communication.

We encourage you to share your opinions, ideas, and background. We believe all of us have unique gifts and talents.

If you are doing something at home that works well for your student, that you are proud of, or simply a fun fact about your family, share

it with us. Your input and voice is so important!

A partnership is not only about being physically present at the school, volunteering, or being on committees—that is only one

aspect of partnership. If you’re working full time, travel for work, or simply cannot be physically present to engage that doesn’t

mean you’re not our partner. There are other ways to engage such as:

  • Add our school to your social media feed.
  • Set up regular times to check in with your student about what they enjoy at school or what is a challenge.
  • Regularly check emails or other communications from your student’s teachers and respond. Ask questions when
  • clarification is needed.
  • Model a positive attitude about school.

Let’s keep the communication lines open! We may have questions or concerns. Let’s create space to ask questions and listen

to each other. We want to be there for you! Just like you, we can’t do this alone. We must come together as a Learning Team

to support your student and ensure they have every opportunity for success.

We look forward to our partnership!

The Power of Onset And Rime in Early Literacy

The Power of Onset And Rime in Early Literacy

The Power of Onset and Rime in Early Literacy

At the heart of early literacy development is a set of foundational skills that support children’s reading and writing success. One of the most powerful tools we use in our Prep classrooms is teaching onset and rime. This simple yet effective strategy plays a crucial role in helping young learners hear, recognise, and manipulate sounds within words, an essential step toward becoming confident readers.

What is Onset and Rime?
An onset is the initial sound or sounds in a word before the vowel (e.g., the c in cat ), and the rime is the rest of the word, beginning with the vowel (e.g., -at in cat ). By breaking words into these parts, children begin to understand how words work and how they can be changed and built upon. For example, once a child knows c-at , they can quickly learn m-at , s-at , and h-at .

Why Does It Matter?
Current research highlights that phonological awareness, including the ability to recognise onset and rime, is a strong predictor of early reading success. In fact, renowned literacy researcher Dr. Linnea Ehri emphasises that “children’s ability to segment and blend onsets and rimes provides a foundation for decoding unfamiliar words and recognising spelling patterns.” Research shows that when students develop this skill early, they are more likely to become fluent, accurate readers in the years ahead.

Engaging Young Minds
In Prep, we explore onset and rime through games, lessons, songs, rhymes, and visual prompts. These activities enable children to experiment with sound combinations in a fun and meaningful way. For example, using word families like -an , -ig , or -op helps children generate a list of rhyming words, boosting vocabulary and phonemic awareness.

Building Strong Foundations
Research from the Early Childhood Education Journal suggests that children who are explicitly taught onset and rime, alongside other phonological awareness strategies, show greater progress in reading readiness compared to those who are not. When paired with rich oral language experiences and quality picture books, this approach gives our Prep students the building blocks they need to thrive as early readers.

At OAGS, we are committed to ensuring every child’s learning journey begins with strong, research-informed foundations. Teaching onset and rime not only supports early literacy development but also nurtures confidence, curiosity, and a love for language.

Prime Minister’s Spelling Bee 2025

Prime Minister’s Spelling Bee 2025

Sixty-five exceptional spellers from Years 3-8 have been nominated by their teachers to participate in the Prime Minister’s Spelling Bee for 2025.

Students taking part in the Spelling Bee will be given 30 random words from their reading level word list. They have 25 seconds to spell each word. Students may not be familiar with all the words they are asked to spell. However, exposing students to new words and their definitions will help expand their vocabularies and encourage them to continue reading.

The Spelling Bee allows students to complete 30 spelling words in a fun format where they have to aim for accuracy, to beat the clock and finish ahead of their fellow students right across Australia.

This is the first time the school has participated in this competition and we are excited to be able to share this  experience and the results with the school community.

If you would like your child to participate in the Spelling Bee, please contact your child’s class teacher to discuss it further.

Supporting your child to learn to read in K-6

Reading should be enjoyable for you and your child but sometimes, it can be a difficult skill to master. For parents, it often leads us to wonder what we can be doing at home to help our children with their reading without knowing where to start.

To support our families, we have created a helpful brochure that outlines some helpful tips about what you can do at home to encourage and support your child’s reading journey. Please know that while all of these suggestions may not work for every family, it is hoped that one or some of them can make a difference.

A copy of the brochure can also be found in the Thrive Centre.

Walking Through the Gospels Together

Walking Through the Gospels Together

Infants and Primary classes have started the term in the New Testament of the bible, in the Gospels. Our lessons have begun with John the Baptist who prepared the way for Jesus. In our lessons, we have had lots of fun dressing up recognising that we “get ready” to do certain things in life. You will see in the pictures that the students had the opportunity to dress up as a captain of a ship, a chef, a builder and a business man. It really is lots of fun to see how much the students engage with learning about Jesus together. We will continue to move through the gospels this term learning more about Jesus, who he is, what he did, and what he has to teach us.
