From the Deputy
From 96 to 98: A Decade of Growth and Excellence at OAGS
From 96 to 98: A Decade of Growth and Excellence at OAGS
What do the numbers 96 and 98 have in common? Perhaps you’d say that they're both even numbers? Or, you'd note they are both divisible by 4? Perhaps you’re a mathematician and can immediately see that 96 has a high power of 2 and a factor of 3, while 98 has a squared prime factor?
For me they’re significant because as I start my 10th year as Deputy at Orange Anglican Grammar School they remind me of how far we’ve come.
In 2016, we had 96 students in the whole of secondary school. This year we have 98 students in just year 7 alone. Wow.
I’d like to take this opportunity to welcome all our new families to the school for 2025. Whether you’ve enrolled your little one in Kindy or Prep, have joined the many new families for Year 7, or have started your journey at OAGS across any of the other year groups, welcome! The start has been fantastic.
Mrs Kimmins, thank you for the work you've done to settle Year 7 in via the ‘ready seven go!’ programme. Our 4 classes of Year 7 have settled very quickly and their excitement as they move around the campus between periods is obvious. Thank you for your vision and energy in this space.
To the Kindy Team of Mrs Pearson, Ms Armstrong, Mrs Hazelton, Mrs Wallacki and Mrs Nyers-Saunders - well done! Settling 50, 5 year olds into their first big-school experience takes patience, patience and more patience! Yet, the gains they’ve already made are obvious and I believe that the Kindy programme at OAGS is not just the best in the region, but functions as a lighthouse programme of best practice across NSW schools.
To the Prep team of Mr Bornen, Mrs Burridge, Mrs Gersbach and Miss Watson, well done! Your little ‘Preppies’ are well on their way to getting themselves ‘big-school’ ready. Seeing them move around the campus for Thrive borrowing or an assembly always puts a smile on everyone’s faces.
To the new staff, all 10 of you, welcome and well done on making such a positive impact so far. Since your induction day last month to the present moment, you have integrated our culture seamlessly and already brought your various areas of expertise to bear on the students in your classes.
Finally, to Year 12, welcome back and let’s go! With last year’s graduates setting a standard of academic excellence with ATARs in the 90s and Band 6 results across the board, now is the time for you to engage deeply with your subjects and set yourselves up for success. This takes focus and commitment and I encourage you to make the most of the few terms you have left as seniors at OAGS.
And so it is that the academic year is well underway for 2025, I look forward to seeing what our students will achieve this year and am honoured to work in such a positive, professional and aspirational environment.
Blessings,
Scott Hazelton
Deputy Headmaster

Building a Strong School Community: Partnering for Your Child’s Success
Building a Strong School Community: Partnering for Your Child’s Success
A positive and engaged school community plays a vital role in shaping a child's educational experience. Whether your child is in kindergarten or Year 12, fostering strong connections between families, teachers, and students enhances learning and well-being. A strong school community benefits everyone. Students feel a greater sense of belonging, leading to improved academic performance, better behaviour, and higher self-esteem. Schools with active parental engagement have been found to have more effective communication, better teacher morale, and a stronger culture of learning.
Here’s how you can support and be part of your child’s educational experience at Orange Anglican Grammar School.
Build Relationships with Teachers and Staff - Regular communication with teachers helps you understand your child’s progress and any areas that may need extra support. Attend parent-teacher meetings, read school newsletters, view your child’s Seesaw page (for primary students) and stay updated through school communication platforms and social media posts.
Support Learning at Home - Engaging in your child’s education beyond the classroom reinforces the importance of learning. Encourage reading, assist with homework, and discuss school topics to show that education is valued at home.
Encourage Positive Peer Relationships - Encouraging your child to form healthy friendships fosters a supportive social environment. Arrange playdates/friend visits, attend school events, and model respectful interactions to help build a strong network.
Promote a Positive Attitude Towards School - Children take cues from their parents. Expressing enthusiasm about school, teachers, and learning encourages a positive mindset in your child.
Volunteer Your Time - parent volunteers are needed to assist in the canteen, for sporting carnivals or for extra curricular activities. Even a small commitment can make a big difference in supporting school programs and building connections.
Join the OAGS P&F - The P&F provides a platform for parents to contribute ideas, raise concerns, and support school initiatives. Participation helps shape the school environment and ensures parents’ voices are heard.
Attend School Events and Workshops - on occasion, we hold parent workshops, information nights, and other events. Participating not only keeps you informed but also strengthens the sense of community.
I look forward to partnering with you on your child’s educational journey.

A Joyful Beginning: OAGS Prep Students Embark on Their Learning Journey
A Joyful Beginning: OAGS Prep Students Embark on Their Learning Journey
We are delighted to welcome all our new families to OAGS Prep! Our Prep Pearls, Diamonds, and Amethysts classes have made a wonderful start to the year, settling into their new routines with enthusiasm and excitement.
In these first few weeks, students have been learning about classroom expectations and working together to set our classroom agreements. These agreements help us create a positive learning environment where every child can thrive as a successful learner.
Throughout the term, our students will engage in a variety of exciting learning experiences. In literacy, we will be exploring syllables and the beats in words to support early phonological awareness. In numeracy, students will focus on rote counting, numeral recognition, and exploring 2D shapes.
Our teachers are incredibly proud of how well the students have settled into school life. We look forward to a wonderful term of learning, discovery, and growth!

Enhancing Numeracy in 2025 - Primary Numeracy Project
In 2025, the Primary School will participate in the Association of Independent Schools' Primary Numeracy Project. This year-long initiative aims to strengthen numeracy instruction and improve student outcomes through evidence-based teaching practices.
So far this term, our Primary School teachers have participated in three professional development sessions with Henrietta Miller, our AIS consultant. In these sessions, teachers have deepened their understanding of explicit teaching, engagement strategies, the importance of checking for understanding every 2–3 minutes, number sense, and place value. In addition, all students have completed a numeracy screener to identify any gaps in understanding, ensuring that our teaching is targeted and responsive to student needs.
A key focus of the project has been implementing the Daily Review, one of Rosenshine’s 10 Principles of Instruction. Daily Reviews are essential as they help consolidate learning through regular practice, reducing cognitive overload and building mathematical fluency. They also allow teachers to continually assess student progress and address misconceptions early. By integrating this strategy into our daily mathematics lessons, we are fostering a culture of active recall and mastery learning, which research shows leads to long-term academic success. This structured, daily approach to revision supports a solid foundation in numeracy and builds student confidence in applying their mathematical knowledge across different contexts.
All teachers have observed a demonstration of a Daily Review and will begin implementing these in their mathematics lessons over the coming week. We are excited to continue embedding Daily Reviews in our mathematics lessons and look forward to seeing the positive impact on student learning and growth over the coming year.

Year 7 - Science Class
Mrs. Nealon's Year 7 Science class recently completed their Bunsen Burner license with big smiles all around! For many students, it was their first time lighting matches, and they did so while learning valuable safety practices in the science lab. It was an exciting and educational experience, as the students demonstrated their understanding of proper lab procedures and safety protocols. Well done to all!

A Wonderful Start to the School Year!
A Wonderful Start to the School Year!
Welcome back to a new school year!
It has been wonderful to see our students return to school, reconnecting with their peers and settling smoothly into their routines. Across every corner of our campus—whether in the science lab, music room, paddock, kitchen, workshop, classroom, or on the sports field—our Secondary School teachers have been incredibly encouraged by the enthusiasm and maturity our students have demonstrated as they re-engage with their learning. Here are a few photos that provide a little snapshot of what they have been learning.

Their positive attitude and commitment to their studies set a strong foundation for a year of growth and achievement. We look forward to supporting them as they continue to embody our school’s values of Truth, Excellence, and Service in all they do.

The Simpson Prize
The Simpson Prize
The Simpson Prize is a national competition for Year 9 and 10 students, focusing on the service of Australians in World War I and World War II. Each year, students are invited to craft an essay exploring an aspect of war.
At the end of 2024, Charlotte Johnstone was recognized for her outstanding essay. It was a pleasure to celebrate Charlotte’s achievement during assembly this week. Below, you can read an excerpt from the introduction to her thoughtful piece of writing.
On the night of August 4th, 1914 when Britain declared war on Germany, the Australia people—still subjects of the British Empire—responded with a wave of support as Australian men rushed to enlist in the Australian Imperial Air Force (AIF). Due to the wide reaches of imperialism, millions were drawn into the conflict in Europe. Australia's involvement in World War One was ultimately due to their colonial roots which were embedded within the fabric of Australian politics, economics and social framework. This essay firstly considers the constitutional and foreign policies that forced Australia's entry into WWI. Secondly, it analyses the economic and strategic motivations that connected Australia's interests to the war effort, and finally, looks at the social, cultural and ethnic ties to the ‘motherland’ before the outbreak of war in 1914. Additionally, this essay investigates the motivations of individual Australians enlisting and in doing so explains why 416,809 Australians volunteered to cross the seas to fight in Britians ‘Great War’.
But why did Australia, situated 14,000km across the sea, follow the rush of European nations into war? The answer lies partly with the fact that despite Federation in 1901, the unification of the six colonies did not grant full sovereignty to the newly formed country; as a dominion of the British Empire most legislative powers and foreign policies still remained under the control of London and the King. This relationship created the expectation that Australia would support Britain in her military conflicts. So when Britain declared war in 1914, Australia had little choice but to join.

ACE
2025 - Week of Engaging
2025 - Week of Engaging
By Mrs Eyb and Mrs Nealon
What a week of engaging Agriculture the ACE crew have had. With Mrs Nealon inspiring year 7 to produce some champion pullets for the Royal Easter Show to Year 11 and 12 meeting with one of the world’s leading bee experts, it’s all buzzing at the ACE (pardon the pun).
Year 7 students at OAGS have had a cluck-tastic start to the year in their Technology Mandatory Agriculture program. They’ve been learning important skills like safely handling chickens, understanding how to pick them up properly, and exploring the various agricultural enterprises at school. Students have also been identifying different industries and learning about what they supply, gaining a solid foundation in the world of agriculture. It’s been an engaging and hands-on experience for them so far!

Stage 5 Agriculture
Stage 5 Agriculture with two very strong classes has been very busy indeed this week harvesting vegetables before the storm for use in the Food Technology department and preparing for some very exciting arrivals in the stud sheep area - more on that next week. These tasty tomatoes are just bursting with flavour and will feature in a range of Italian-inspired dishes.
Stage 6 Ag and Primary Industries
The Year 11 Agriculture and some Year 12 students were lucky enough to have a visit by Bulgarian beekeeper Slavi Nenov to talk about all things Verroa and also a discussion on Northern Hemisphere beekeeping techniques. Employed by NSW DPI as one of the Verroa Development Officers, Slavi was originally coming to do a full hive workshop with the students, but when the thunderstorms hit, he instead presented a highly informative in-service on varroa mites.
Did you know bees in Bulgaria survive -25 degrees Celsius by huddling like penguins and vibrating to keep the brood nest and queen at a stable temperature of 27 degrees? Or that honey has an acid pH of 3.5-4.5, hence its natural antibiotic properties? What about the dances of bees - scout bees actually direct their colleagues to the exact distance and angle of the sun to a new food source!
In keeping up with our best practice mentality, Year 12 has been working out how to best use our electronic scanner and scales to ensure all our stock treatments and weights are now online and up to date.

Kokoda Trek Monday 22 Sep - Thursday 02 Oct 2025
Kokoda training has commenced in earnest and it is pleasing to see a good number of participants taking advantage of this. While not everyone can attend and we understand that, each trekker should be undertaking their own fitness training on a regular basis. The basic fitness requirements are listed in the Kokoda Adventures information pages.
For those that wish to attend (whether coming to Kokoda in September or not) we meet at Mt. Canobolas (intersection of Mt. Canobolas and Old Mt. Canobolas Roads starting at the Powerline Track). There is a scrape at this location and we park there. This occurs every Sunday morning (unless advised) and we step off NLT 08.30m and walk approximately 13 km over a period of 4.5 hours. As we get closer to the trek in September, we will lengthen the walk, which usually gets faster. Our training speed is nowhere near what we walk in PNG, as each leg is spread out over the whole day (sometimes into the night).
We are the stage at finalising the team to make the trip in September. If you or your child is still deciding to attend, that will need to happen within the next two weeks. Final numbers are being compiled now. Please let me know at [email protected].
Hope to see you at all or some of these events and any person who wishes to come along to Kokoda training, please let me know.
