Primary School’s Term 1 Highlights

Primary School’s Term 1 Highlights

As we wrap up a vibrant and action-packed term, it’s wonderful to reflect on all the learning, growth, and fun that’s filled our days. From exciting excursions and hands-on projects to sporting carnivals and creative arts, our students have embraced every opportunity with enthusiasm and curiosity. This term has not only been about learning in the classroom, but also about building friendships, developing resilience, and celebrating the unique talents each student brings to our school community. Here’s what some of our students had to say about their highlights from the term...

  • Leena B: I like playing with my friends. We always have arguments but after a while we always agree on a plan that we all like.
  • Billie W: I liked playing with my new friends.
  • Lachlan C: I’ve enjoyed how everyone is helping each other in the playground if they get hurt.
  • David M: There was a frog in the shower at camp and I had to rescue it.
  • Tim P: I really liked raft building at camp because we got to work together with people who I like, to make something that floats. We used pipes, tyres, a big surfing board (that wasn’t a good idea) and ropes. It worked for five seconds and then everything fell apart!
  • Sienna C: I liked the swimming carnival because I like swimming and I think I’m a pretty good swimmer. It was great being with friends all day.
  • Renei N: The athletics carnival was a favourite. I like how you can push yourself to get better, not just at running, but also shotput and high jump and all the other things.
  • Callum H and Michael W: A highlight was making dioramas in Science. It was a project and we got points. It was also for fun. We’ve also become great friends and we both love eating.
  • Evie R: I have learnt about the three rules in art - perspective, colour and lines. We have also learnt about 80s music in Music.
  • Steph B: I have enjoyed learning different things like dance, music and art, and I liked going to camp.
  • Sophie and Lexi: The first day of school was a highlight. We had a science assignment about melting and freezing. Dancing for sport was great. I loved the flute (Sophie) and Lexi liked the clarinet. We loved making rocky road and we got to have the leftovers in a bowl. We also enjoyed learning about old music in music.
  • Charlotte A: I enjoyed dancing because we got to learn different moves. I enjoyed Art because we tried new things. I enjoyed camp because we got to do things like raft building, spy missions, crate climbing and so much more.
  • Joaquin O: Everyone has worked really hard this term, which is positive. Everyone has got at least one Gotcha and some people have even started to reach their silver award. Everyone has a chance to learn something new at school and can get smart. I have learnt some coding this term and I am nearly finished with my coding project. I have also participated in string ensemble.
  • Annais C: Camp in Canberra was fun. We had lots of opportunities to see things that we wouldn’t normally see, like Parliament House. We got to visit the House of Representatives and the Senate. I am new this year and have really enjoyed all the opportunities I get here.

As we head into the Easter break, we wish all our families a restorative holiday. May the hot cross buns remind us of Jesus’ death on the cross and the Easter eggs remind us of new life and hope found in Jesus, because of his resurrection. We look forward to welcoming everyone back for another great term ahead.

Primary Numeracy Project: Parent Workshop

Primary Numeracy Project: Parent Workshop

As part of the Primary Numeracy Project, parents and caregivers of OAGS Primary School students are invited to a one-hour parent workshop with Henrietta Miller, our consultant from the Association of Independent Schools. This practical session will introduce you to the multiplicative and additive strategies taught at school from Kindergarten - Year 6. It will show you how you can help your child at home to develop strong number sense and broaden your understanding of what it takes to become a strong mathematician. Websites and resources that can be used at home will also be shared.

Following the workshop, parents and caregivers will be invited to visit their child’s classroom and participate in a short maths activity.

Date: Thursday, 15th May 2025

Time: 8.30 - 9.30am

Venue: The Media Centre, followed by classroom visits

We kindly ask that you register your attendance via the RSVP form by Monday, 12th May.

Year 4 Science

Year 4 Science

This term, Year 4 students have been exploring how heat affects different materials. Both classes had the opportunity to work alongside one another, sharing ideas and testing their thinking through hands-on investigations. We explored which substances melt fastest, compared runny and thick liquids to investigate viscosity, and made rocky road to see how ingredients combine when warmed.

Most recently, students took on the ice cube challenge. Working in teams, they designed and built containers to slow down melting, using what they had learned about materials, heat and insulation.

Science has been creative, practical and full of thoughtful questions. We are looking forward to what next term brings.

Save the Date! OAGS Primary Musical 2025 – When I Grow Up

Save the Date! OAGS Primary Musical 2025 – When I Grow Up

After the outstanding success of The Amazing Adventures of Superstan in 2023, the OAGS Primary School is thrilled to announce its next spectacular production: When I Grow Up by Elisa Polimeni-Das.

This year’s show will take place at the Orange Civic Theatre on Thursday, 3rd July, with students performing in both a matinee and evening show. Mark the date in your calendars now – it’s going to be a performance to remember!

Directed by Mr Kyle Palmer, When I Grow Up follows the journey of 12-year-old Ashley, who is unsure of what she wants to be when she grows up. As the story unfolds, Ashley dives into a whirlwind of different occupations, each with hilarious mishaps and unexpected surprises. It’s a heartwarming and comical exploration of ambition, imagination, and the adventure of self-discovery.

Every student from Prep to Year 6 will take part, with each year group learning a unique song and dance during their music lessons with Miss Li or Mr Clipsham. Lead roles were opened to students in Years 4 to 6, and after an exciting round of auditions last week, the cast has been selected.

Stay tuned for more updates and behind-the-scenes glimpses in the coming weeks. Keep an eye on your emails for further details about the show and how you may be able to volunteer and support this exciting event.

From Shoreline to Storyline: Year 6 Discover Storm Boy

From Shoreline to Storyline: Year 6 Discover Storm Boy

This term, Year 6 students have been immersed in the world of Colin Thiele’s Storm Boy, a timeless Australian novel that explores the beauty of the natural world, the bonds of friendship, and the challenges of growing up. Through close reading and discussion, students have unpacked how authors craft engaging narratives using descriptive settings, compelling characters, and thoughtfully developed action.

Students were captivated by the wild, windswept setting of South Australia’s Coorong and analysed how Thiele’s use of figurative language, such as ‘the sea thundered and hissed like an angry snake’, helped paint vivid pictures in the reader’s mind. They explored the emotional depth of the characters, particularly the strong bond between Storm Boy and Mr Percival, and considered how key events shaped their development over time.

Throughout the term, students identified common narrative conventions, including orientation, complication, climax and resolution. They noticed recurring patterns in structure and language, and used these insights to plan and write their own creative sequels to Storm Boy. Many imagined what life might look like for Storm Boy as a teenager or adult, with some stories set in the modern day and others continuing in the timeless landscape of the Coorong.

This rich unit also supported growth in reading comprehension, vocabulary, grammar, handwriting, and fluency. Students encountered and applied new words such as ‘solitude’, ‘reluctant’, and ‘tussock’, while using grammar knowledge and personification, such as ‘Storm Boy stood still, his heart pounding as the first drops of rain danced on the sand.’

Through oral reading, shared discussion and thoughtful reflection, Year 6 students have not only engaged deeply with the text, but also connected it to their own lived experiences, whether through memories of the beach, caring for animals, or navigating change.

It has been a term of literary adventure and creative growth!

Partnering with Parents for Student Success

Partnering with Parents for Student Success

At OAGS, we believe that partnering with parents is key to helping our students achieve their very best. This partnership can take place informally—such as when parents reach out to discuss important learning matters—or through more formal avenues like parent-teacher meetings.

If you would like to connect with your child’s teacher, you’re welcome to email them directly (teachers' email addresses follow the format: [email protected]) or phone the school and ask to be transferred.

We extend our sincere thanks to all the parents who were able to attend last week’s parent-teacher meetings, either via Zoom or in person. Our teachers truly value these conversations, as they offer a valuable opportunity to build relationships with families and share insights about each child's progress in the classroom. We hope you found the discussions helpful, and we look forward to holding another round of meetings early in Term 3, following the release of the mid-year reports.

To our Year 12 parents: by the time you receive this newsletter, your child’s Semester 1 report should have arrived. We encourage you to take some dedicated time to review it with your child. These conversations can be powerful moments to reflect on progress, identify areas for growth, and plan for the final two terms ahead. Discussing the teacher’s feedback together can help students feel supported and focused as they approach the final stretch of their schooling journey.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns after reading the report, please don’t hesitate to reach out to your child’s teacher using the contact methods above.

Foundations of Faith: A Joyful Journey Through Scripture

Foundations of Faith: A Joyful Journey Through Scripture

Christian Studies has been an exciting time of discovery for many of our students. Prep and Kindy are very pleased with their ability to memorise the very first verse of the bible, Genesis 1:1 In the beginning, God created the Heavens and the Earth. Using their new found skills to share in front of their classmates, it has been a lot of fun. Years 1-6 have just wrapped up our  series on the Garden, the Curtain and the Cross. A journey from Genesis to Revelation, packed with truths from the bible, involving lots of creativity, music and student involvement. The students have enjoyed singing and playing games as well as praying together and deepening their understanding of God and the Bible. This will form a wonderful foundation for their continued learning over the coming terms.

Launching CRU Primary: A Joyful Journey of Faith for Years 3–6

We were also excited to launch our CRU primary groups for years 3-6 this term. These groups are held at second break and are a fun and engaging way to discover more about Jesus and what it means to follow him, through student and staff led games, singing and activities.

Music

Music

When most of the school is heading home on Friday afternoon for a well deserved weekend, a group of dedicated musicians are staying behind for a rehearsal of our newest ensemble, Friday Jazz Band. Under the expert guidance of Mr Jon Clipsham, this group is learning about jazz through hands-on experience. They are taking their first steps, what it’s like to play this style, how to be part of a ‘section’ and how to improvise. The early results are very encouraging and I’m sure they will make their public debut some time in Term 2. This is an exciting initiative for the school, offering another opportunity for our musicians to shine.

OAGS Dance

OAGS Dance

Stage 2 Dance Gearing Up for Eisteddfod!

Our talented Stage 2 dancers have been working hard with their wonderful teachers, Miss Madi and Miss Grace, to learn and perfect their dance item.

The students have embraced the challenge with enthusiasm, learning some very creative and energetic moves. Their dedication, teamwork, and commitment to improvement have been truly impressive.

The team is now looking forward to showcasing their routine at the upcoming School Eisteddfod in Orange later this year.

Great work, girls – we can’t wait to see you shine on stage!

Visual Arts

Visual Arts

Year 7 have spent Term 1 learning to draw what they see, not what they think they see. This has culminated in a beautiful collection of portraits completed by our talented cohort. Over a number of weeks students have sketched, measured, shaded and evaluated their drawings, well done on an impressive collection of works.

Seen here with their before and after comparison.

OAGS Teams Shine in Grand Finals

OAGS Teams Shine in Grand Finals

Monday 7th was an exciting evening for Orange Anglican Grammar School, with two of our basketball teams hitting the court for their grand final matches.

The OAGS Ballers took on a strong and determined side, the United Comets. In a high energy match, our boys demonstrated excellent teamwork and outstanding sportsmanship to come away with a well earned 22–18 victory. Congratulations to the Ballers on a fantastic win!

Also on Monday night, the OAGS Bucks faced off against the Trojans. The Bucks held the lead for most of the game, playing with skill and determination. Unfortunately, in a nail biting finish, foul trouble saw the team down to just four players in the final minute. Despite their best efforts, the Bucks narrowly went down by just one point, with the final score 64–63. A valiant effort and a game to be proud of!

On Tuesday night, our youngest basketball players took to the court. With energy and enthusiasm, they showcased their developing skills and teamwork, securing an impressive 28–16 win. It’s exciting to see such promising talent coming through!

Thursday afternoon saw the grand final match of the OAGS Warriors, who faced off against the Wookies. Unfortunately the Wookies were too strong for our Warriors, the Warriors going down 21 : 17 in the last few minutes. Well done boys, you played hard!

Well done to all our OAGS teams for representing our school with pride, passion, and perseverance] for the Orange Basketball Associations Summer Competition.

OAGS Cross Country Carnival

OAGS Cross Country Carnival

This week marked an exciting first for our school as the annual cross country event was held at the Orange Botanic Gardens. The new venue proved to be a popular choice, receiving enthusiastic feedback from students, staff, and spectators alike.

Our school values of excellence and service were prominently displayed throughout the day. Runners demonstrated remarkable determination and sportsmanship as they navigated the scenic course, giving their absolute best in each race category.

Mr Miller's PASS (Physical Activity and Sports Studies) class played an integral role in the event's success, embodying our service values by volunteering as checkpoint marshals. Their commitment ensured the races ran smoothly and safely for all participants.

The combination of beautiful surroundings, athletic achievement, and community spirit made this year's cross country event truly memorable. Congratulations to all runners and thank you to everyone who contributed to making the day a success!

AICES Schools Cup Basketball

AICES Schools Cup Basketball

On Wednesday 26th March, both the OAGS Open Boys’ and Girls’ Basketball teams travelled to Sydney to compete in the AICES Schools Cup. It was a fantastic day of competition, with both teams showing determination, skill, and school spirit.

The Open Girls team faced some tough competition throughout the day. Despite not progressing to the finals, the girls played with heart and pride, representing OAGS with great sportsmanship and enthusiasm.

The Open Boys team performed strongly in their pool, finishing in 3rd place and progressing to the playoffs. In their first finals match, the boys secured a solid win against Arden. They then faced Northholm in a tightly contested game, narrowly missing out on victory after a crucial final basket in the closing seconds.

Both teams are to be congratulated on their efforts and the way they represented the school. A big thank you to Mr Job for his support and assistance on the day.

OAGS hosted the Central West HICES Netball trials on Friday of Week 10. Schools from across the Central West region gathered at OAGS, with talented young netballers competing for coveted positions on the Central West HICES netball team.

The Primary representative team played very well throughout the trials, showcasing impressive skills and teamwork on the court.

THE SMITH FAMILY – Student2Student - Readers Program Offer

THE SMITH FAMILY – Student2Student - Readers Program Offer

How does the student2student program work?

The Smith Family’s student2student program matches an older student (the Buddy) with your child (the Reader) to help improve their reading and confidence. The student2student program is offered to students (Readers) who are in Years 3 to 8 and who are assessed as reading up to two or four years behind their actual age. The s2s program runs for an 18 week period during the school year. Readers are matched with Buddies who attend a different school, with both students only knowing each other's first names.

The Buddy calls the reader 2-3 times a week and listens to them read for at least 20 minutes each time. The Buddy uses the skills learnt in their training to assist the Reader with their reading.

What do I need to do?

Assist your child with setting up their first reading session by responding to the Buddy Parent’s call or text. They will introduce themselves and confirm reading times with you.

Keep The Smith Family updated when we call to check in on how the program is going for your child.

Encourage your child to complete the full 18-week program and participate fully during each session.

Help your child prepare for their reading sessions, making sure they are in a quiet, comfortable space.

Contact your Buddy’s parent/ guardian if you need to change a session time, giving as much notice as possible.

Contact The Smith Family Program Specialist with any questions or concerns (details below) or If you need translation and interpretation support, your Program Specialist can organise this for you.

What does my child use during the reading sessions?

Your child participates in our program through our Digital Model: Digital Model – a computer, laptop or tablet logged into the Chatty Kids website where they will read from a range of different electronic books.

**Please still make contact as we can potentially work around not having access, digitally.

Please contact the local Program Coordinator with The Smith Family for more information or if you have any questions at all.
